What is BTEC Business?

BTEC’s are still mainly assessed by coursework, which is fantastic if coursework is your strong point, and BTECs now include ‘exams’ and ‘tasks’ too. The exams are particularly important for students aiming for University or Professions as they help you to keep familiar with exam techniques required to pass Degrees and Professional Courses, and the tasks are really important for employers who need employees who can think on their feet and complete a given task successfully.

These new BTEC Nationals are more rounded and can allow you to shine whatever your strengths, while giving you vital skills for the future.

BTEC Nationals changed in 2016 and are now even better than the courses they replaced.

These units are assessed in different ways, 5 of them are coursework based, 2 of them are tasks (similar to ‘controlled assessments’) and one is a written exam paper. Every unit you complete will be assessed and graded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction and when the individual unit grades are added together a final grade is calculated.

Extended Diploma

You would be with a third teacher and complete an additional 5 units over the two years of the course, i.e. 13 in total.

  • Unit 1 Exploring business

  • Unit 2 Developing a marketing campaign

  • Unit 3 Personal and business finance

  • Unit 4 Managing an event

  • Unit 5 International business

  • Unit 6 Principles of management

  • Unit 7 Investigating corporate responsibility

  • Unit 8 Investigating customer service

Work Placement

As part of the course you will spend time in a business on work placement. This will help you to see what really goes on in a business and will help you to improve your CV making you more employable in the future. Our students almost always receive a glowing assessment from their placements and several have even been offered part-time employment.

How will you study?

The BTEC National is a practical course – you will learn by ‘doing’. We focus on the types of problems that any business person would face on a daily basis and teach you the ways that you may solve those problems. Your challenge is to prove your knowledge and understanding of business through the coursework, task or exam as appropriate.

For example, the Marketing unit has a ‘task’ based assessment. In that task there may be a business launching a new product and the business wants to make sure that customers will buy the new product to increase profit. The task may require you to complete some market research to find out more about the potential customers, and then suggest and design some advertising, promotion and special offers that may convince the customers to buy the product – just as you may have to do if you worked in the Marketing Department of a real business.
