You will examine the way in which speech works, the structure of conversation and the ways we choose words based on the context and the purpose. You will study a variety of texts structured around a theme such as Love and Loss or Society and the Individual. In your coursework unit you will choose two texts yourself and use these as a basis for your own writing that are designed to work for a variety of audiences and purposes.
What skills will I develop
All forms of communication will develop on this course. You will learn to write and manipulate your language for a variety of different audiences and purposes. You will learn to write analytically in extended argumentative essays. You will work in groups and develop your interpersonal skills. Most crucially however you will be encouraged to think critically about texts and the world around you. Hopefully, too you will develop a love of literature and language that you will take with you through the rest of your life.
